Jon Marginis
Registered Psychologist
Jon Marginis is a Registered Psychologist with AHPRA and is a member of the Association of Counselling Psychologists (ACP).
Jon is experienced in working alongside children (from 3 years of age), adolescents and young adults. He also has a strong focus on working with boys and males. He enjoys helping his clients alleviate their distress and assisting them in gaining a better understanding of the origin of their difficulties. Jon’s areas of interest include Anxiety, Behaviour Management, Body Image Issues, Depression, Difficulties with Emotional Regulation, Eating Disorders, Exam Stress, Identity Issues, Issues Around Sexuality, Learning Disabilities (ADD/ADHD, Dyslexia/Dysgraphia etc), Relationship Issues, School Transition/Refusal Issues, Self-Harm, Sexuality Issues and Substance Abuse.
He has been trained in several evidence-based techniques including Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Behavioural Management/Therapy, Brief Solution Focused Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT), Existential Therapy, Grief and Loss Counselling, Interpersonal Therapy, Mindfulness-Based Therapy, Play Therapy, Psychodynamic Therapy and Solution Focused Therapy. At the heart of all of Jon’s work, he believes that a positive relationship with the client is essential. Jon strives to achieve this and works from a client-centred approach.
Clinical Experience and Background
Jon obtained his Masters of Psychology (Counselling) Degree from Curtin University and also holds a qualification in Positive Psychology from the University of Pennsylvania. Jon has predominantly worked with individuals between 3-25 years of age and has knowledge of the appropriate developmental milestones. Jon also commonly works with the parents of children and adolescents he sees to provide the best support for all individuals involved. Jon has done the majority of his work in school settings, where he has become accustomed to many of the issues experienced by children and adolescents. By doing so, he is aware of the guidelines and criteria for disability adjustments for timed assessments under the Schools Curriculum Standards Authority (SCSA) and the International Baccalaureate Diploma (IB Diploma).
Apart from working with children, adolescent and young adults, Jon also has experience working with men, specifically around male-dominated issues. In September 2019 he spoke at an International Conference on Men’s Health with his topic being “Why Men Don’t’ Talk”.
In regards to research, Jon has covered a range of topics and has written two dissertations. Jon’s dissertations include The Effect of Anxiety on The Emotional Match of Mother-Child Dyads in Hearing Impaired Children (2016) and The Role of Sense of Belonging in Digital Piracy: A Qualitative Approach (2012).
