Psychologist

Maryse is a Registered Psychologist providing a trauma-informed, safe and respectful therapeutic environment where her clients can feel supported and free from judgement as they explore their experiences and interactions with the world around them.

Originally trained in information science in Belgium, Maryse started her career in change management before migrating to Perth with her husband and children 25 years ago. She finalised her Honours in Psychology in 2016 researching pain. Maryse held the role of Injury Management Consultant and Counsellor, where she has supported clients from various sectors, such as Emergency Services, Education, Mining and Construction. She has also worked in Aboriginal Health, Aged Care, Child Protection and Veteran Affairs.

Maryse has joined the Clear Health Psychology team in Fremantle. With her broad life experience and her strong training in Psychology, Maryse draws from various evidence-based therapeutic modalities to offer her clients treatment options and strategies that will best suit their needs and goals.

Drawing on over 30 years’ experience in change management and work-life balance as well as more recent training on pain and trauma, Maryse has a keen interest in supporting people experiencing major changes in their lives.

Maryse is also passionate about parenting, couple communication and intimacy as well as Aged Care. Maryse offers evidence-based strategies to support and empower her clients to withstand the psychological demands of their different challenges.

Clients working with Wendy can expect unwavering positive regard, warmth, relatability, and commitment to providing a therapeutic environment free from judgement in which you can feel safe, respected and accepted. In the therapeutic space, Wendy aims to help clients to get a deeper understanding of themselves and their experiences and how they are connecting and operating in the world in which they find themselves. Operating from various therapeutic modalities including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Acceptance Commitment Therapy, Wendy holds space for clients to be vulnerable, to explore, to process, to grow, to learn and to find courage and confidence to move toward desired change.

Wendy works with adults and older adults to navigate disruption in psychological wellness and life transitions across domains such as career, relationships, parenthood, health, illness, loss and ageing.

Drawing on over 20 years of experience in health care, Wendy has a keen interest in health-related psychology including working with people in caregiving roles, working with clients in the context of preparing, adjusting and rehabilitation from illness, injury, and surgical procedures and supporting clients living with chronic health conditions.

As a mother herself, Wendy is also passionate about all things perinatal and feels honoured to support women and their families through the psychological demands associated with the transition to parenthood. Having published psychology research in the field of risk perception, communication and VBAC (vaginal birth after caesarean), Wendy is particularly interested in women’s preparation for birth and birthing experience, as well as postnatal wellbeing.

Lyn is a registered Clinical Psychologist who aims to provide a safe, respectful space by being non-judgemental, warm and open; whilst ensuring that all clients feel heard and understood. Working together in this way supports increased clarity about any life difficulties, the realisation of new possibilities and increased capacity to achieve desired change.

Lyn enjoys  working with adults (and in particular older adults; male or female) with a wide range of presenting issues. She is committed to providing a high quality, evidence-based psychological service that is tailored to each client’s unique situation, needs and preferences. 

Background

Lyn has had a long history of work in the health sector. Her early professional life was spent working as a nurse in a variety of mainly rural and remote settings. This wealth of knowledge and broad experience in life contributes to her grounded approach when working with people as a Clinical Psychologist.

Clinical Experience

Lyn has worked  in private practice and in a sexual assault treatment facility; as well as  undertaking psychological work in a mental health service. Her areas of particular experience and interest are:

  • Stress

  • Anxiety disorders

  • Depression, including major depressive disorder

  • Adjustment difficulties to changed life circumstances

  • Self-esteem, confidence and assertiveness difficulties

  • Grief and loss

  • Trauma

  • Post Traumatic Sress Disorder

  • Carer support

Her approach:

Lyn applies a range of evidence-based therapies including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT),  Trauma Informed CBT, Schema Therapy and Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing.  She will  work with clients to plan realistic goals and  treatment using these and other approaches.

Lyn acknowledges the courage that it may take to make an initial appointment for  psychology and she maintains hope that change is always possible for every client.

Shelah Johnston

Shelah Johnston

Clinical Psychologist

Shelah is an experienced and AHPRA registered Clinical Psychologist, HCPC-UK registered Educational Psychologist and board approved Supervisor with AHPRA.

Shelah is experienced in working with children, adolescents,  adults, the elderly, couples, families and groups.

Shelah draws on her training and expertise working across different age groups, cultures and settings to help others to heal from past negative experiences and trauma, become more aware of current ineffective patterns of behaviour and thinking, empowering them to develop new ways of thinking and coping with current and future difficulties.

Her compassionate, mindfulness based approach incorporates the use of research based strategies including Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing, Emotion Focussed Therapy for anxiety, depression and with couples/ relationships, Meditation and Mindfulness, group training and facilitation, and behavioural coping strategies such as Assertiveness training.

Shelah's areas of interest include help to overcome Anxiety and Depression using Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy, Trauma and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Interpersonal Relationships working particularly with individuals on the Autism Spectrum and supporting the elderly, sick and injured to adjust to changing circumstances.

Clinical Experience and Background

Shelah commenced her work as a Psychologist working in Schools in the WA Education Department and spent many years providing support to effect the best outcomes for students, their families and the school as an organisation. This service was provided in a multi systemic way and included individual and group assessment and intervention. One area of interest was training and coaching staff in the provision of classroom meditation and mindfulness programs.

As a Senior School Psychologist Shelah provided training and supervision to other School Psychologists as well as developing and coordinating a School Psychology service to rural WA.

After gaining her Master’s in Clinical Psychology at Murdoch University, Shelah commenced work as a Clinical Psychologist with the Department for child protection, family and children services. Shelah worked there for 8 years with traumatised children, adolescents and families in such areas as domestic violence, abuse, substance abuse and parenting skills.

Shelah then worked in Private practice for many years, receiving referrals from GP's to support those with anxiety, depression, trauma, injury and illness and adjustment disorder, PTSD, workers compensation and relationship difficulties.

More recently Shelah has worked overseas including supporting the mental health of people held in offshore detention centres and working with Medicine Sans Frontiers as a Mental Health Activity Manager helping children adolescents and adults in the factory and workshops of Bangladesh.

Shelah has over 30 years experience working with a broad range of individuals, couples, families and groups across a variety of settings and believes that the foundation for helping others is compassion and that everyone has the potential to achieve peace of mind no matter what their circumstances.

Jeff Howe

Jeff Howe

Psychologist

Jeff is experienced in working with adolescents and adults around issues including depression, anxiety, self-esteem, grief and loss, adjustment and trauma reactions, interpersonal / relationship conflicts and addiction.

Accessing support can be daunting and as such, Jeff’s warm and engaging style aims to create a safe and relaxed space to work through challenges. Jeff’s therapeutic approach is client-centered and collaborative, utilizing evidence-based techniques from CBT, DBT, ACT, Schema, Motivational Interviewing and Interpersonal Psychotherapy modalities.

Jeff obtained his Psychology qualifications through Murdoch University. He started his career at the Education department working with difficult to engage young people. Jeff has also worked in the criminal justice system and more recently in youth mental health, drug and alcohol services and private practice.

Janet is a Registered Psychologist with AHPRA and is a member of the Australian Psychological Society (APS).

Janet is experienced in working with adolescents and adults in the areas of anxiety, depression, self-esteem, work related and personal stress issues, trauma, grief and loss, FIFO relationships, couples counselling, parenting, anger management, work/life balance, health and lifestyle changes. She enjoys working with clients, providing a safe and non-judgmental environment, and helping them to acquire and improve their knowledge and skills in managing their emotions to enable a happier and more fulfilled lifestyle.

She has been trained in several evidence based therapeutic techniques including Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT); Solution Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT); Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT); Mindfulness and Relaxation techniques; Motivational interviewing and Narrative therapy.

Clinical Experience and Background

Janet obtained a Bachelor of Science (Psychology) at Curtin University; and Bachelor of Psychology and Master of Applied Psychology at Murdoch University. As a nationally accredited Mediator she has experience in dealing with conflict in the workplace. She has worked as a Registered Psychologist in private practice; with the ADF; with asylum seekers in Detention centres using interpreters to provide psychological services to torture and trauma survivors. She is also experienced in the provision of EAP services in a wide variety of areas including the provision of both face to face interventions, and telephone counselling; assisting managers with organisational issues; attending traumas and critical incidents; and providing mental health training in a variety of remote environments.

Janet focuses on providing a safe and non-judgemental environment in which clients can feel comfortable in expressing their concerns, and tailoring her approach to best suit the individual client needs to facilitate their overall well being.

Clinical Psychologist

Jamie is a registered Clinical Psychologist and Board-approved Supervisor with AHPRA.

Jamie is experienced in working with adults, with a special interest in the older adult population. She helps clients to develop a better understanding of the difficulties they are experiencing and to move forward in making meaningful changes. She has extensive experience in the areas of mood and anxiety disorders, grief, end-of-life issues, adjustment to life changes, and chronic illness.

Jamie combines components from various therapeutic approaches including Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Schema Therapy, and Mindfulness. She uses an approach that is client-centred and collaborative and has a warm and non-judgemental style that helps to create a safe therapeutic space.

Clinical Experience and Background

Jamie completed her master’s degree in Clinical Psychology and has over 10 years’ experience working in the public sector. She has worked in community mental health clinics, as well as hospital inpatient and outpatient settings. She particularly enjoys working with clients and families impacted by stroke, Parkinson’s Disease, and dementia.
