Kathy Kirwan is a Counselling Psychologist who is a Fellow of the Australian Psychological Society (APS) College of Counselling Psychologists. She is also a member of the Association of Counselling Psychologists (ACP). She is experienced in working with adolescents, young adults, adults, and couples.
Kathy starts her work from a stance that the client is the expert in their life and the counselling provides a space for that knowledge to combine with her experience and expertise as we work towards the client’s goals in a safe emotional space.
Kathy has completed training in several evidence based therapeutic techniques including Emotionally Focused Therapy (for couples, Gottman’s Therapy (for couples), Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing Therapy (for anxiety, trauma, PTSD, grief), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Solution Focused Therapy Interpersonal Therapy, Cognitive Behaviour Therapy and others.
Clinical experience and background
Kathy graduated from Curtin University in the Master of Psychology (Counselling) program. Kathy’s early work in counselling was focused on relationship difficulties, sexuality and sexual health issues. She has extensive experience working in Employee Assistance Programs providing counselling for workplace and personal issues that included anxiety, depression and stress, work/life balance, trauma, PTSD, relationship difficulties, sexuality and sexual health issues. She has worked as a senior manager which can be invaluable for understanding workplace complexities. Her more recent experience has involved working in Private Practice.
